NAMNAMBULU – Expansion EP

New NamNamBulu. With great anticipation received by me (of course), I always enjoy doing follow-ups on bands after their successful albums. 'Distances' was a launch ramp for Zürich duo, and they reached far. Now, flying high brings risk of falling low. Where is NNB after this new “Expansion”?

'Still high and gaining momentum towards outer space' is a simple answer. This release is truly an expansion: building on standard beats and synth pop taste, Vasi Vallis continues to push boundaries of harmonies. Yes, sometimes constant use of same sound-bank makes certain songs tolook too similar, but let’s call call that his signature and style. Another set of phenomenally woven melodies awaits you. And more. Henrik Iversen has a signature of his own: unique colour of voice. Taken by some as non-appealing, his deep but soft singing is really hard to connect to synth pop. I respect his choice of keeping it uncoded. I also have high regards for his writing skills – no coding here as well: direct and open, lyrics complement music excellently. OK, nothing new said there, so now it’s time for the extra stuff: [:SITD:]. Come to think of it, their music is similar. Yes, sounds strange but it’s true: mutate Henrik’s words and add German accent, boost percussions and there you are – ‘Forgiving’ track is born. Both versions are amazing, genetic engineering at it’s best, but I must emphasize ‘Transformation remix’: it is a hit with option to become HUGE club favourite. With credentials.
Talking of clubs, another treat is included: ‘Memories (club remix)’ is a 3D edition of band’s biggest success. Excellent! All other remixes follow in quality, making me spin second half of this EP constantly. I know originals by heart and comparing them with new versions revealed true value of NamNambulu’s skill. And that got confirmation in new tracks:’ Faces’ is a 100 percent trademark product, ‘Zeit’ is even more, and ‘Transcending’ is a surprise - similar to VNV Nation’s ‘Electronaut’ but with narration and better melody.

Enough said. Well, just a few more words as conclusion:

Great bands are made with their second album. Will Vallis and Iversen create a match to all expectations remains to be seen. 'Expansion' puts them on a right course, therefore I feel even greater anticipation now. You should, as well. Next album by NamNamBulu might be significant.
